This week I am excited to be interviewing Mia M. Lane. Mia is a Manager of Executive and Administration as well as the Chair of EA Ignite and has so much wisdom to share!
You lead a high-performing team of executive assistants at UKG while also providing direct support to two senior executives. What unique insights has this dual role given you about the challenges and opportunities for administrative teams today?
Supporting two senior executives while leading a high-performing EA team gives me a unique, full-circle view of our profession.
From the leadership seat, I see the power of a connected team. consistent communication, shared best practices, and a culture of trust drive our success. My role is to remove barriers, anticipate needs, and create space for my team to excel.
From the practitioner seat, I experience the fast pace and shifting priorities firsthand. That keeps me empathetic to my team’s challenges and sharp in spotting opportunities to add value.
This dual role has shown me that when EAs think strategically, they do far more than support the work, they help shape it.
What does "empowerment" mean to you in the context of the EA profession, and how do you empower the EAs on your team to elevate their own roles?
Empowerment means giving EAs both the permission and the confidence to own their seat at the table. It is shifting from “I am here to support” to “I am here to lead alongside.”
It is about equipping my team with the tools, resources, and visibility they need to make decisions, influence outcomes, and contribute strategically. I want them to know their voice matters in every conversation.
Can you share an example of a time your calm execution and trusted partnership with a vendor or internal team were critical in navigating an unexpected challenge during an event? What was the outcome?
In my role, I know challenges during events can surface at any moment, from technical issues to last-minute agenda changes. In one instance, a key internal meeting with senior leaders began to go off track due to a scheduling conflict and shifting priorities.
I worked with our internal communications lead to quickly adjust the flow, prioritize agenda items, and keep everyone aligned. Because of the trust we had built, the team adapted seamlessly, and the meeting still ended on time with all key decisions made.
It was a clear reminder that in moments of uncertainty, leadership is often defined by how quietly and effectively you steer things back on course.
As an administrative leader, what is one emerging trend or skill that you believe will be most crucial for administrative professionals to develop in the next 5-10 years?
Five to ten years is a long time to predict, especially with how quickly technology and workplace trends shift. I focus on the next one to three years, where we can act with clarity.
The priorities are mastering AI and automation, building confidence, and strengthening strategic partnerships. AI frees time for higher-value work, but confidence is what empowers EAs to speak up, influence outcomes, and take on projects that expand their impact. Those who blend tech fluency with strategic presence will help shape the future of their organizations.
What is the biggest piece of advice you would offer to an administrative professional who is just starting their career today, looking to build a long, impactful journey like yours?
Start by believing in the value you bring before anyone else does. Confidence in your worth will shape how you show up, the opportunities you pursue, and how others see you.
Be curious, keep learning, and build relationships that challenge and inspire you. Do not wait for permission to lead, because leadership is about influence, not titles.
Most importantly, remember: Your impact is real. Your voice matters. You are somebody. With that mindset, you are not just building a career, you are building a legacy.
